VeloCloud's cloud-delivered Software-defined WAN ensures business and cloud application performance via the Internet and hybrid WAN while simplifying installations and lowering expenses. VeloCloud is a cloud network service solution that enables organizations to rapidly establish Enterprise-grade connectivity to legacy and cloud applications via private networks and Internet broadband. The components of the VeloCloud Software-defined WAN system are depicted in the diagram below (in orange). The features are detailed in further detail in the sections that follow. Keep reading to know how velocloud works. Without ado, let’s go ahead in detail!

Components of Velocloud
Gateways to the Cloud
These are pretty intriguing. The Cloud Gateways are appliances managed and supplied as a service by the VeloCloud team. These gateways are located in data centers worldwide, near the world's cloud providers (Office365, AWS, SalesForce, and many more). They ensure you connect to a cloud provider and optimize traffic through the best possible path.
These are not the same as the appliances installed in an AWS VPC or Azure Resource Group to operate as a 'cloud' edge appliance. Those are just edge appliances that are hosted in your cloud.
The cloud gateways can also be used as an SD-WAN Deployment arrangement. The simplicity of cloud gateways is its most attractive feature.
Edge Home Appliances
An Edge Device is a natural or virtual appliance that sits in your network's data flow. It is usually the last hop before traffic is sent to the internet or internal networks (i.e., MPLS). In smaller branches, it can even serve as the default router for the network's hosts.
These Edges are provisioned and configured via the Orchestrator (more on that later), and they don't require much configuration when they first arrive. It is usually pre-provisioned based on the serial number. You must plug it in, connect to the default wireless network it generates (or put in a direct connection), and navigate to the appliance to activate it. When an Edge is pre-provisioned, you may send someone an email detailing the process. That email contains a direct link to the appliance's activation page.
Functionalities
An Edge router offers the networking capabilities that you would expect from an edge router. Internal switch interfaces, VLANs, OSPF & BGP for dynamic routing, firewall, IPsec VPN, VRRP, and so on. However, non-standard features like service-chaining and clustering can be used to produce a highly available gateway.
The physical appliance is generally simply there because you need to put your internet connection or MPLS connection into an actual physical box. Virtual Appliance SD-WAN functionalities are by default contained in the software. This indicates that the virtual appliance has the same capabilities as the actual device (save for operating as a Wireless Access-Point).
Physical Device
You'd want an actual appliance most of the time because, well, cords. Your ISP provides you with a physical connection, which you must plug into somewhere. These physical appliances are built on the most recent multi-core x86 architecture and include Intel QAT and DPDK for enhanced performance. They also provide wifi connection to local customers.
SD-WAN Deployment Model Types
VeloCloud provides two SD-WAN models: over-the-top (OTT) and network integration. The distinction between these two techniques is in managing the overlay edge nodes.
OTT
SD-WAN overlay edge nodes serve as multi-tenant virtual gateways in a "network integrated" system. These are then installed in data centers and the network of service providers. Hosted services are offered by establishing gateways in cloud data centers, while private MPLS networks are provided by putting gateways at provider edge POPs.
Integrated Network
The Orchestrator and controllers of a network-integrated system can be implemented as publicly accessible or within an enterprise's network.
VeloCloud's network-integrated design benefits service providers by ensuring that all last-mile circuits, including broadband internet, have access to the enterprise's private MPLS network. These networks are beneficial for long-distance communication.
